Mayor & City Council
The Garden Plain Governing Body consists of five at-large, non-partisan council members plus a Mayor. All members serve two-year terms. City elections take place in the fall of each year, with two council members and the Mayor up for election in odd-numbered years, and three council members in even years. The Mayor is recognized as the head of City government in a formal capacity. He conducts council meetings, executes contracts, deeds, and agreements on behalf of the City. He has no vote except in the event of a tie. The Council President generally fulfills this role when the Mayor is not available.
